How Japanese Say Hello
HOW CAN YOU SAY HELLO IN JAPANESE WITHOUT EMBARRASSING YOURSELF?
One of the most common ways to say hello in Japanese is using the word ‘Konnichiwa‘, pronounced KON NI CHI WA. This means ‘good afternoon’ but as someone travelling to Japan, you will be alright using this in most times of the day and in different situations, at least in the beginning.
But I have to warn you there are many other ways the Japanese say hello, which are all very important. You need to use the right words in certain situations and times of day, not only the different ways to say hello in Japan but also most other Japanese words. If you use the wrong words, it can cause major embarrassment and potentially harm your personal or work relationship.
I always had problems learning new languages and had previously tried various Japanese language courses but didn’t get anywhere with them. Most of them were boring and I just gave up. Anyway, here are the main ways to say hello in this wonderful (but complicated!) language.
HELLO IN JAPANESE EXAMPLES
When You First Meet Someone
When you meet someone (in person) for the first time, you need to say Hajimemashite and break it down into – HA JI ME MA SHI TE.
Saying Hello in the Morning
When you want to say hello in the morning time (especially when you meet them for breakfast for example), you should say Ohayou gozaimasu and they are pronounced O HA YO U GO ZAI MASU.
Saying Hello in the Afternoon
As I mentioned before, the word to say hello in the afternoon time is Konnichiwa and you break it down into Kon ni chi wa.
Saying Hello in the Evening
This is another fairly simple word which is Konbanwa and you say it like Kon ban wa.

Saying Hello on the Phone
The most common way of saying hello on the phone is Moshi Moshi and you break it down into Mo shi Mo Shi. There is a lot more you need to know about saying hello on the phone, so I suggest you read our Hello on the Phone page to learn more.
